Maker Labs: Arduino Club

$20 per classPurchase required to enroll
About this Maker Labs Arduino Club:

Curious about the buzzphrase: "Internet of Things"? Is it a fridge that texts? Is it your front door self-unlocking? Is it a wireless camera in an infant's room? Yes - it’s all of those things and more.

For many, it’s not much of a surprise that objects can sense things and communicate. The phone so many of us carry can track where we are, our temperature, take photos and pay for goods with a tap.

What might be surprising, is that it's not hard or expensive to make a sensing, communicating object yourself. And making smart objects can be rewarding, fun and even useful.

In this class, which meets on a monthly basis, we will explore the world of IoT through Arduino, learn the art of physical computing and start hacking our world.

Arduino Club Structure:

Each class will be structured with an introductory project we can all work on together, then a time for show and tell, questions and trouble-shooting. You are encouraged to bring your projects so we can all be enlightened by the endless possibilities of the awesome world of Arduino.

At each monthly meeting we will
  • Learn basic circuitry, starting with breadboarding
  • Develop the ability to control circuits with an Arduino Uno
  • Learn important programming tools, including the use of variables, program structure and control
  • Make circuits with resistors, LEDs, sensors, motors and buzzers
  • Gain the confidence to tackle Arduino-based projects
  • Learn to use free, open source software coding environments
  • Learn to connect to outside world: sound, light, temperature, pressure and movement
  • Use coding to realize new and unique creative and artistic visions, for example with LED lights
  • Learn how to interface with useful information online
  • Develop and enhance a creative mindset
  • Exercise skills in critical thinking, problem solving and creativity
  • Delve into the fun, dynamic world of Arduino
  • Support each other in our learning journey
Takeaways
  • The basic skills to bring your projects to life
  • Confidence to tackle your own Arduino-based projects to challenge your reaction time
  • Pointers to online reference materials
  • Build a foundation of knowledge about digital data, IoT, the outside world and how to transform it through code
  • Hone skills to shape the world through building, tinkering, re/designing and hacking
  • Cool creative smart objects
  • Best practices and principles of coding for interfacing with the real world
  • Hands-on electronics, soldering and physical computing experience-
  • Knowledge of how 21st century digital design technology works and how it is transforming our world
Prereqs and Preparation
No previous experience needed. Each meeting will have an onramp for beginners to come get started. Even the creatives among us who are still struggling to pronounce the word “Arduino” can be successful in this class.
